An npm package that gives Playwright tests a generated set, and an example of what it finds - #220
An npm package, npm/testing-files-generator, that turns a generated set into Playwright tests. It is not published yet. Publishing comes in a later pull request, from the release's own bytes.
Every file is a test. The title names the file and its expected outcome, and the report shows what the file is for. Tags such as @reject and @size-limit narrow a run.
A failure says what it means.check throws the sentence the manifest carries for that file, for example "1mb_over_1b.jpg was taken, and it should have been turned away (size_limit). ... taking it means the limit is not enforced, or enforced only in the browser."
Unspecified files are skipped with their reason, never passed.check refuses one.
npx tfg runs the same binary, with the same output and exit codes.
An example, examples/playwright. It is an upload form with four deliberate mistakes:
the server never checks the size;
content and extension are never compared;
an allowed extension anywhere in the name counts;
the page refuses a file of exactly the limit.
The tests written with Buffer.alloc all pass. Their oversized "PDF" is zeros, so the server refuses it for its content, and the size test passes on a server with no size limit. The generated set, sent through the page and straight to the API, finds all four mistakes: 11 tests fail. With FIXED=1 nothing fails. That second run is the control showing the red tests come from the app, not from the tests.
How the package works
Loading a spec writes nothing.fileSet runs tfg generate --dry-run --json and declares the tests from the plan. A spec file loads in the runner and again in every worker, and --list loads it too. Measured on Playwright 1.64.1 with two specs and three workers: eight loads, three of them in the same millisecond.
The first test that asks for a path writes the set, once for all workers. Each worker writes its own copy and moves it into place. The first move wins. The others find the winner complete, take it, and remove their own copy through tfg cleanup, so only files the manifest lists are removed. There are no locks. A Windows rename that a scanner holds for a moment is retried.
Later runs reuse the set. The cache key covers the arguments, the recipe hash, the seed and the tool. The recipe hash alone is not enough, because it leaves out --seed and --clean: two seeds gave the same hash for different bytes. A set that was changed by hand is refused and left in place. An unfinished set from a stopped run is reported once, by the runner process only, and never used.
The package does not wrap the test body. Playwright refuses a wrapped body ("First argument must use the object destructuring pattern"), because it reads fixture names from the function's source. So the package never imports @playwright/test, and it works with any test and with other runners.
No dependencies and no install script. The binary will come from per-platform packages, @testing-files-generator/<platform>-<arch>, for the five systems the release builds. TFG_BINARY overrides it. PATH is never searched.
Licence: MPL-2.0 for the package, the same as @axe-core/playwright. The binary stays GPL-3.0 and runs as a separate program.
A set written earlier, by another run or another worker, goes through tfg verify before it is used. A test that writes into a file it was given keeps the size and changes the set, and such a set is refused with the files that differ. For the default upload set of 115 MB this takes about a seventh of the time the set takes to write.
Guards
npmpackage_test.go:
the package's platforms against the release's target loop;
Outcome and Reason in index.d.ts, and the outcome list in lib/testfile.js, against recipe.Outcomes and recipe.Reasons;
every field index.d.ts declares against the JSON tags of manifest.File, Expected, Manifest, Tool, Run and Summary;
the text of the package and the example: ASCII, flat hyphens, no semicolons. This covers comments everywhere, and string literals in the runtime files.
Both READMEs join the English text files that ascii and punctuation read.
TestTheLinkedPackageIsUnderTheLicenceTheGateIsToldItIs: the package's package.json and LICENSE against the MPL-2.0 that the dependency gate's exceptions state.
Eight mutation entries.
node --test, 28 tests, most of them against the real binary:
a race of four processes, held at a barrier so that all four write, asserting four wrote, one moved and three took the winner's copy;
a set edited by hand (a file deleted, a file truncated, a file written over with its size kept), refused and left in place;
another seed and --clean;
a set left by a stopped run;
the exit code of npx tfg;
a child stopped by a signal, and a child that writes 4 MiB to its error stream;
a binary or a recipe option that names nothing, and a platform package that is there and gives no binary.
Manual mutants, all caught:
the existing-target check in the race;
discarding the losing copy;
the size check;
the byte check of a kept set, and the exit code it is told by;
the error stream going back into a buffer, and its start kept in place of its end;
the signal name lost from the status (on Linux, in node:22);
the cache key;
a check that never throws;
mistake 2 removed from the app;
one for each Go guard.
One mutant was not caught and is equivalent: path against name. They are equal today because engine.go sets Path from the name, and a name cannot hold a separator.
CI
A new npm job runs on all three systems with Node 22, the oldest version the package declares and Playwright supports. It builds tfg and runs the package's tests. On Linux it also installs Chromium, runs tsc --noEmit and runs check.mjs. This changes .github/workflows/ci.yml.
The example commits a lockfile, so its tree, all Apache-2.0 and MIT, reaches the dependency gate. The package itself is linked from this repository and is on no registry, so GitHub reports it twice, by name and by path, with no licence. Both names are exceptions in .github/scripts/dependency_gate.py, held to MPL-2.0 by the guard above.
The memory guard on another run's record (TestAnotherRunsRecordListingOneFileOverAndOverHoldsItOnce) no longer applies its ceiling under the race detector. Under the detector its reading spreads by more than a megabyte either way, against a ceiling of 50 kB. Without it the reading is steady, and the three test jobs keep the ceiling.
Added an npm package for generating test files, filtering file sets, and checking observed outcomes against expected results. It includes TypeScript definitions and support for Windows, Linux, and macOS on supported architectures.
Added a Playwright upload example that tests file-size limits, allowed file types, and content validation in both unfixed and corrected modes.
Documentation
Added guides for the npm package and Playwright example, including setup, usage, and test commands.
…ample of what it finds
npm/testing-files-generator plans a set with tfg while a spec file loads,
writing nothing, so every file becomes a test with a title, tags and the
sentence that says what the file is for. The first test that asks for a path
writes the set, once for every worker: each writes a copy and the first to move
it to its name wins, the others take it and remove theirs through tfg cleanup.
Later runs take the same files, keyed by the arguments as well as the recipe
hash, which leaves out the seed and --clean. check compares what the system did
with the manifest and throws with that sentence. Unspecified files are skipped,
never passed. No dependencies, no install script, MPL-2.0. Not published yet.
examples/playwright is an upload form with four mistakes. The generated set
finds all four through the page and the API, the tests written with
Buffer.alloc find none, and with the mistakes fixed nothing fails. CI runs the
package's tests on three systems and the example on Linux.
Guards hold the package to the platforms the release builds, the closed lists
and fields of the manifest, and the punctuation of the text it shows.

Generated-file expectations and checks npm/testing-files-generator/lib/testfile.js, npm/testing-files-generator/test/testfile.test.js
TestFile exposes file metadata and expected outcomes, and checks observed outcomes and rejection reasons. Tests cover metadata, paths, and mismatch handling.
The example serves an upload form and endpoint with default and fixed validation modes. Playwright tests exercise typical uploads and generated cases through the page and endpoint. check.mjs verifies results in both modes.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The PR adds no CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env paths. Diff scans found no credentials, tokens, API keys, personal emails, internal hosts/IPs, or local machine paths. The added URLs are public project, npm registry, Mozilla license, or localhost test URLs. Console output and stderr writes serve example status, CLI errors, warnings, and test fixtures; no debugger, breakpoint, or leftover debug print was found.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
PASS: The PR adds a browser HTML/JavaScript upload example, but it does not add or change XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, or WPF code-behind. The new HTML contains only semantic form controls, with no colors, fonts, sizes, spacing, radii, or copied styled controls.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem is introduced. The package uses one planning process per distinct file-set specification, one generation process per source write, and one verification process per reused set, not one external process per file. File and filter operations are linear in set size. No UI-thread blocking, unvirtualized UI collection, polling loop, or clear quadratic algorithm is present.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
PASS: The PR does not add or change any mechanism covered by this check. The changed code starts a localhost HTTP test server, launches the project CLI, and writes temporary/cache files. It does not modify network filters or rules, proxies, firewalls, system time, process hooks or injection, Windows services, the registry, or drivers. The reversibility warning is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The pull request scope matches its title and description: it adds the new npm package, the Playwright example, CI coverage, and supporting dependency/text guards. The base has no npm/testing-files-generator or examples/playwright paths, so the feature does not duplicate an existing package or example architecture. The package README documents fileSet, npx tfg, TFG_BINARY, caching, and supported runtimes. The example README documents build, install, test, and FIXED=1 steps. The package is new and unpublished, so no backward-incompatible public API change is introduced.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The new runtime behavior has tests: package tests cover binary resolution, file-set planning/reuse/races/cache validation, process errors, and TestFile; CI runs them, and the Playwright acceptance check exercises the example app. However, an existing assertion was weakened without justification in the authored PR description. internal/guard/manifestreadlimits_test.go now returns when raceEnabled, so the allocation ceiling assertion no longer runs under the race detector. The description does not explain this change.
Resolution
Amend the PR description to explicitly state why the allocation assertion is disabled under -race and that non-race runs still enforce it. Preferably replace the unconditional skip with a race-specific, valid allocation check so the behavior remains covered under both modes.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
The PR still introduces both listed robustness problems. fileSet() resolves and reads spec.recipe with path.resolve(...), so relative recipe assets are loaded from process.cwd(); the README and TypeScript declaration document this behavior. Planning runs runToFile() through blocking spawnSync, and writing starts run() without an AbortSignal. The public fileSet, write, and paths APIs expose no progress or cancellation controls. The README documents a 115 MB default set, so this is a long operation. The per-process _written promise prevents duplicate write() calls, but it does not address progress or cancellation.
Resolution
Require absolute recipe paths or accept an explicit base directory instead of resolving relative recipes from process.cwd(). Add documented progress and cancellation options to planning and writing. Use asynchronous child-process execution, terminate the child when cancellation occurs, and clean temporary output before rejection.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
The prior failure remains unresolved. examples/playwright/app/server.mjs:78 calls Request.formData() on the complete request and line 82 calls file.arrayBuffer() followed by Buffer.from() without a request or file-size limit. A large multipart upload can exhaust memory before verdict() checks the size. npm/testing-files-generator/lib/fileset.js:67 reads an arbitrary recipe with unbounded fs.readFileSync; lines 171 and 283 parse complete plan and cached-manifest JSON after unbounded reads. examples/playwright/check.mjs:51 does the same for the Playwright report. Malformed plan or report JSON can also escape as an uncaught parse or shape error. The changed code introduces no XML, CSV, XLSX, archive, formula, or external-entity parser.
Resolution
Replace Request.formData() and file.arrayBuffer() with a streaming multipart parser such as busboy, with explicit request, files, fields, and fileSize limits. Count bytes while streaming, retain only a bounded prefix for sniffing, and return a controlled 413 response before creating a full Buffer. Bound recipe reads before hashing and parsing. Replace the plan, cached-manifest, and report fs.readFileSync plus JSON.parse calls with bounded streaming JSON parsing, or enforce strict size limits using a bounded read. Validate the expected object, array, field types, entry count, and relative paths. Catch malformed input and return controlled errors. Apply the same limits to mismatch() cached manifests and check.mjs reports.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The PR adds user-facing text that is unclear and inconsistent. The upload page exposes machine reason codes as Refused (size_limit) and similar values (examples/playwright/app/page.js:14,21), so users are not told what happened or what action to take. The API returns raw exceptions in error: String(err) (examples/playwright/app/server.mjs:103). Package diagnostics also pass through raw child, OS, and parser text in TfgError and file-set errors (npm/testing-files-generator/lib/run.js:19-21,28-30; lib/fileset.js:228,248; lib/binary.js:54-55). The same rejection concept is presented as reject, turned away, and Refused across the API, reports, documentation, and UI.
Resolution
Keep machine-readable reason and Outcome values, but map each reason to a stable message with an action. For example: Upload rejected: the file exceeds the 1 MiB limit. Choose a smaller file and try again. Add clear messages for invalid extension, malformed content, MIME mismatch, no file, and server failure. Remove raw String(err) from API responses; log or retain it as a non-displayed cause and return a stable actionable message. Wrap raw tfg/OS/parser diagnostics in user-oriented package errors while retaining the details separately. Standardize user-facing wording on accepted and rejected; retain the API value reject where required.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
The PR introduces unbounded resource accumulation. npm/testing-files-generator/lib/fileset.js:46-72 stores every unique source in the process-wide sources Map; no entry is evicted or disposed, and each source retains its plan and TestFile objects. Source._settle keeps one completed generated set on disk for each distinct argument/seed/tool combination (:158, :213-233). The README explicitly states that nothing removes these sets (npm/testing-files-generator/README.md:98). Stopped .tmp-* directories are only detected and reported by noteUnfinished (fileset.js:360-375), not removed. This can grow memory and disk usage in long-running processes.
Resolution
Add lifecycle management for sources, such as bounded eviction or an explicit disposal operation used after a test run. Add documented cache retention limits by age, count, or bytes, and evict only completed sets that are not in use. When a .tmp-* directory belongs to a dead process, remove it after validation; also remove temporary output on every failed write and shutdown path. Keep user-modified completed sets protected, and test the retention and failure cleanup behavior.

…ugh, held to MPL-2.0 by a guard
GitHub's graph reports the package linked into examples/playwright twice, by
its name and by its path, with no licence, because a linked directory is on no
registry. Both names become exceptions, and a guard holds the package's
package.json and LICENSE to the MPL-2.0 the exception states.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Do not report every resolve failure as "not installed".
The bare catch turns every error from resolve into the --omit=optional advice. require.resolve can also fail with ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED, for example when the platform package's exports map does not expose tfg or tfg.exe. A user in that case gets wrong advice and no cause. Reinstalling does not fix it.
Report the "not installed" text only for MODULE_NOT_FOUND. Rethrow other errors, or append err.message.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Desktop Robustness:
Add an explicit base directory or require absolute recipe paths instead of
resolving recipes from `process.cwd()`. Provide progress and cancellation
options for planning and writing, use asynchronous child-process execution,
terminate the child on cancellation, and clean temporary output before
rejecting. Document the cancellation and progress behavior.
- Safe File Parsing:
Replace `Request.formData()` and `file.arrayBuffer()` with a streaming multipart
parser such as `busboy`, configured with explicit `files`, `fields`, and
`fileSize` limits. Count bytes while streaming and inspect only a bounded
prefix. Replace each `fs.readFileSync(...); JSON.parse(...)` pair with a bounded
streaming JSON parser, or enforce a strict file-size limit before parsing, then
validate the expected schema and return controlled errors for malformed input.
Apply the same limits to cached manifests and Playwright reports.
- Clear User-Facing Text:
Keep machine-readable `reason` values for tests, but display clear messages with
an action, such as `Upload rejected: the file exceeds the 1 MiB limit. Choose a
smaller file and try again.` Add specific messages for invalid extension,
malformed content, MIME mismatch, no file, and server failure. Do not return
`String(err)` or raw OS/parser text to users; log or retain it as a
non-displayed cause and return an actionable stable message. Standardize the
rejection wording across titles, reports, README text, and UI, for example
`accepted`/`rejected` (while retaining the API value `reject`).
- No Resource Leaks:
Add bounded lifecycle management. Limit or evict inactive entries from `sources`
(or provide and require a `dispose` operation that removes them after the test
run). Add cache retention limits by age, count, or bytes, and evict only
completed sets that are not in use. Remove stale `.tmp-*` directories after
confirming their owner process is dead, including cleanup on failed writes and
shutdown. Document the retention policy and ensure cleanup runs on all error
paths.

## What a change has to satisfy
- **Silence is banned.** A file that was not produced, a name the filesystem
would not take, a limit the tool invented for you - each of those has to be
visible in the output and in the manifest. A manifest that quietly skipped ten
files looks complete and becomes a false result in somebody's test run.

## What a change has to satisfy
- **Every change in behaviour comes with a test that fails without it.** A green
suite is not evidence on its own. The question to answer in the pull request
is "which test would go red if this change were undone". Each test in
`internal/guard` is also broken on purpose by an entry in
`internal/guard/mutation/entries.py`, and the `mutation` check on a pull
request runs the entries the change reaches. A new test needs an entry there,
or a line in `internal/guard/mutationcoverage_test.go` saying why it has none.

Handle a failed Playwright start and a stale results/check.json.
spawnSync returns an error or signal when the process cannot start or is killed. The code ignores both. It then reads results/check.json. This file can come from an earlier npm run check. If Playwright fails before it writes the report, the script reads old data. It then prints problems that refer to the test run, not to the real failure. If the file is absent, it crashes with a raw ENOENT stack.
A non-zero exit code is normal here, because red tests are expected. Remove the old report before each run and check only error, signal, and the report's existence.

Update the `run` function to remove any existing `results/check.json` before
starting Playwright, then inspect the `spawnSync` result and verify the report
exists before reading it. Fail with a clear error if startup failed, the process
was killed by a signal, or no report was produced; preserve non-zero exit codes
as normal because failing tests are expected.

Register both local dependency names in the licence exceptions.
GitHub resolves this file: dependency without licence metadata, so the dependency gate blocks the pull request even though the package is licensed MPL-2.0. The failed check currently makes the ordinary merge workflow blocked.

Fix the build command. It produces a binary the example does not look for on Linux and macOS.
playwright.config.ts sets TFG_BINARY only if tfg.exe (win32) or tfg (other systems) exists in the repository root. The command here always writes tfg.exe. On Linux and macOS the config does not find the binary, so the tests fall back to other binary resolution or fail. CI uses "tfg$(go env GOEXE)" for this reason.

Give an explicit spec.binary the same clear error as TFG_BINARY.
identity() calls fs.statSync(binary) with no guard. If spec.binary names a missing file, the user sees a raw ENOENT: no such file or directory, stat '...' thrown at spec-load time. binaryPath() gives a message with the path and the fix for the same mistake via TFG_BINARY.
Check for the file first and use the same wording.

Reject edited cached files by verifying their contents.
When a cached generated file changes without changing its byte length, mismatch accepts it because it checks only stat.size. Fix runToFile handling of signal exits and stderr overflow.
Two paths give wrong results:
If a signal kills tfg, done.status is null. TfgError then prints "ended with code null" and sets status = null. run() already uses status ?? signal, so the two functions disagree. The declared type number | string is also violated.
If tfg writes more than maxBuffer (1 MiB) to stderr, spawnSync kills it and sets done.error to ENOBUFS. notStarted then reports "tfg could not be started". That is false, because tfg started.
Preserve the signal. Name the overflow cause.

Add a deadline to the racer barrier.
ready() polls forever until racers files exist in the barrier directory. If one racer throws before it writes its barrier file, the others never leave the loop. Examples are a fileSet() planning failure or a missing binary. node --test has no default timeout. The test then hangs until the CI job limit and reports no cause.
Fail the racer after a fixed time. Pass a timeout option to the test() call as well.

Fix the build hint so it matches the path tfg() looks for.
built is tfg.exe only on Windows and tfg elsewhere. The error text tells every user to build with -o tfg.exe. A Linux or macOS developer who follows it creates tfg.exe. The suite still reports "No tfg binary" for tfg. This blocks the documented local test workflow.

…r stream no longer stops it part way
A set written by an earlier run, or by another worker, was taken when its
files had the sizes the plan says. A test that writes into a file it was given
keeps the size and changes the set for every later run. Such a set now goes
through tfg verify first and is refused with the files that differ. Checking
the default upload set of 115 MB takes about a seventh of the time it takes to
write it.
The planning run kept tfg's error stream in a buffer of 1 MiB, and a run that
said more was stopped and reported as never started. It now goes to a file
and only its end is kept. A run stopped by a signal is named by the signal.
A binary or recipe the options name and that is not there is said so, with
where a relative recipe path is taken from. The advice about --omit=optional
is given only when the platform package is missing. The example's check no
longer reads a report an earlier run left, and the build commands name the
binary each system looks for.
The memory guard on another run's record no longer applies its ceiling under
the race detector, which allocates on its own account. Measured on one
machine over nine runs, its reading moved from 2.35 MB below to 1.72 MB above
the other record, against a ceiling of 50 kB. Without the detector the reading is 0.68
to 0.82 MB below, and the jobs that run without it keep the ceiling.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Decode child output with setEncoding('utf8').
stdout += chunk and stderr += chunk call Buffer.toString() on each chunk separately. A multibyte UTF-8 character split across two chunks becomes replacement characters. Several tests compare this output exactly or by regex. The filename-handling preset can put emoji and non-ASCII names into tfg output. A chunk boundary inside such a name then causes a test failure that is hard to diagnose. Set the encoding before the handlers attach.
test/fileset.test.js lines 197-201 have the same pattern for the direct run.
Based on learnings: "call stream.setEncoding("utf8") before attaching data handlers, rather than calling Buffer.toString() on each chunk."

check based on the default-run test report: record each listed test that
actually fails when mistakes are present, then report every listed test that did
not go red. Ensure missing tests in the report are also reported, so the check
cannot pass solely because entries exist in the `mistakes` table.
Review comments at @internal/guard/npmpackage_test.go:
- Around line 98-103: The licence assertion in the dependency gate guard is
vacuous because it searches the entire file, where MPL-2.0 already appears in
the ALLOWED set. Update the test around the exception-name loop to inspect each
matched exception entry’s line, and require MPL-2.0 only for the name-keyed
testing-files-generator entry; keep the path-keyed entry check limited to
confirming its presence.
- Around line 159-165: Update the field-name pattern in typeScriptFields to
allow digits after the first character while preserving leading underscores and
the existing optional-question-mark handling, so guarded names such as sha256
are included in manifest alignment checks.
---
Failed pre-merge checks:
- Tests For Changed Behavior:
Amend the PR description to explicitly state why the allocation assertion is
disabled under `-race` and that non-race runs still enforce it. Preferably
replace the unconditional skip with a race-specific, valid allocation check so
the behavior remains covered under both modes.
- Desktop Robustness:
Require absolute recipe paths or accept an explicit base directory instead of
resolving relative recipes from `process.cwd()`. Add documented progress and
cancellation options to planning and writing. Use asynchronous child-process
execution, terminate the child when cancellation occurs, and clean temporary
output before rejection.
- Safe File Parsing:
Replace `Request.formData()` and `file.arrayBuffer()` with a streaming multipart
parser such as `busboy`, with explicit request, `files`, `fields`, and
`fileSize` limits. Count bytes while streaming, retain only a bounded prefix for
sniffing, and return a controlled 413 response before creating a full `Buffer`.
Bound recipe reads before hashing and parsing. Replace the plan,
cached-manifest, and report `fs.readFileSync` plus `JSON.parse` calls with
bounded streaming JSON parsing, or enforce strict size limits using a bounded
read. Validate the expected object, array, field types, entry count, and
relative paths. Catch malformed input and return controlled errors. Apply the
same limits to `mismatch()` cached manifests and `check.mjs` reports.
- Clear User-Facing Text:
Keep machine-readable `reason` and `Outcome` values, but map each reason to a
stable message with an action. For example: `Upload rejected: the file exceeds
the 1 MiB limit. Choose a smaller file and try again.` Add clear messages for
invalid extension, malformed content, MIME mismatch, no file, and server
failure. Remove raw `String(err)` from API responses; log or retain it as a
non-displayed cause and return a stable actionable message. Wrap raw
tfg/OS/parser diagnostics in user-oriented package errors while retaining the
details separately. Standardize user-facing wording on `accepted` and
`rejected`; retain the API value `reject` where required.
- No Resource Leaks:
Add lifecycle management for `sources`, such as bounded eviction or an explicit
disposal operation used after a test run. Add documented cache retention limits
by age, count, or bytes, and evict only completed sets that are not in use. When
a `.tmp-*` directory belongs to a dead process, remove it after validation; also
remove temporary output on every failed write and shutdown path. Keep
user-modified completed sets protected, and test the retention and failure
cleanup behavior.

The LICENSE prefix check does not fail on a Windows checkout. .gitattributes sets * text=auto eol=lf, and git check-attr confirms that npm/testing-files-generator/LICENSE resolves to eol: lf. Git writes LF line endings for this file on every platform, so the expected prefix Mozilla Public License Version 2.0\n matches.
.github/workflows/ci.yml: 1
1525-1543: Functional Correctness
The CI job already provides the binary path.
The package test helper resolves the repository-root binary and passes it through TFG_BINARY. The Playwright configuration performs the same lookup before check.mjs runs the tests. The requested workflow change is not needed.
npm/testing-files-generator/package.json: 1
34-36: Declare the five platform packages under optionalDependencies.
bin/tfg.js is declared. lib/binary.js resolves five @testing-files-generator/<platform>-<arch> packages. package.json does not list them. A user who installs this package therefore gets no tfg binary. binaryPath() then throws the "not installed" error. The package README says the package installs tfg for each supported system, so that claim is false until these entries exist. Add optionalDependencies for win32-x64, win32-arm64, linux-x64, linux-arm64 and darwin-arm64. Pin each to the release version. Publish those five packages before this one.

Make the "mistake has no test that finds it" check depend on the test report.
found is built from the static mistakes table. Every number 1-4 is in that table, so this loop cannot fail unless someone edits the table. The per-test loop also checks only tests that appear in the report. If the preset stops producing a listed file, for example invoice.jpg.exe, no test exists. Nothing reports it, and the script still prints that the set finds all four mistakes. The control can therefore pass without detecting the mistake.
Record which listed tests went red in the default run. Report each listed test that did not.
Add this before the for (const fixed ...) loop:
constredInDefault=newSet();
Add this inside the per-test loop, after const failed = ...:

console.log(`${mode}: ${red} red, ${tests.length - red - skipped} green, ${skipped} skipped as unspecified`);

Replace the static `found` check over `mistakes` with a check based on the
default-run test report: record each listed test that actually fails when
mistakes are present, then report every listed test that did not go red. Ensure
missing tests in the report are also reported, so the check cannot pass solely
because entries exist in the `mistakes` table.

Fix the vacuous licence check in the dependency gate guard.
gate already holds "MPL-2.0" in the ALLOWED set of dependency_gate.py. The second condition, !strings.Contains(gate, "MPL-2.0"), is therefore always false. No input makes that half of the guard fail. If someone edits the exception text to name another licence, this test stays green.
Check the line of the exception entry instead. Check the licence only for the name-keyed entry. The path-keyed entry does not mention the licence in its description.
As per path instructions: "A guard that cannot fail is the most valuable finding" and "Ask of every new assertion 'what input makes this red?'"

Review comment at @internal/guard/npmpackage_test.go around lines 98 - 103:
The licence assertion in the dependency gate guard is vacuous because it
searches the entire file, where MPL-2.0 already appears in the ALLOWED set.
Update the test around the exception-name loop to inspect each matched exception
entry’s line, and require MPL-2.0 only for the name-keyed
testing-files-generator entry; keep the path-keyed entry check limited to
confirming its presence.

Allow digits in guarded TypeScript field names.
A future guarded field such as sha256: string; would be skipped and could evade the manifest alignment check. No current guarded declaration has such a field, so this improves guard coverage rather than fixing an existing mismatch. Preserve leading underscores in the pattern.

Update the field-name pattern in typeScriptFields to allow digits after the
first character while preserving leading underscores and the existing
optional-question-mark handling, so guarded names such as sha256 are included in
manifest alignment checks.

An npm package,
npm/testing-files-generator, that turns a generated set into Playwright tests. It is not published yet. Publishing comes in a later pull request, from the release's own bytes.@rejectand@size-limitnarrow a run.checkthrows the sentence the manifest carries for that file, for example "1mb_over_1b.jpg was taken, and it should have been turned away (size_limit). ... taking it means the limit is not enforced, or enforced only in the browser."checkrefuses one.npx tfgruns the same binary, with the same output and exit codes.An example,
examples/playwright. It is an upload form with four deliberate mistakes:The tests written with
Buffer.allocall pass. Their oversized "PDF" is zeros, so the server refuses it for its content, and the size test passes on a server with no size limit. The generated set, sent through the page and straight to the API, finds all four mistakes: 11 tests fail. WithFIXED=1nothing fails. That second run is the control showing the red tests come from the app, not from the tests.How the package works
fileSetrunstfg generate --dry-run --jsonand declares the tests from the plan. A spec file loads in the runner and again in every worker, and--listloads it too. A new
npmjob runs on all three systems with Node 22, the oldest version the package declares and Playwright supports. It builds tfg and runs the package's tests. On Linux it also installs Chromium, runstsc --noEmitand runscheck.mjs. This changes.github/workflows/ci.yml.The example commits a lockfile, so its tree, all Apache-2.0 and MIT, reaches the dependency gate. The package itself is linked from this repository and is on no registry, so GitHub reports it twice, by name and by path, with no licence. Both names are exceptions in
.github/scripts/dependency_gate.py, held to MPL-2.0 by the guard above.The memory guard on another run's record (
TestAnotherRunsRecordListingOneFileOverAndOverHoldsItOnce) no longer applies its ceiling under the race detector. Under the detector its reading spreads by more than a megabyte either way, against a ceiling of 50 kB. Without it the reading is steady, and the three test jobs keep the ceiling.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
